Knee Joint Flashcards
What classification is the joint?
What attaches to gerdys tubercle?
Synovial, bicondylar
Iliotibial band
How does the capsule surround the joint?
Posteriorly, medially and laterally as tissue - anteriorly changes to quadriceps expansion and patella
What is the quadriceps expansion?
Quadriceps tendon (above patella) patellar tendon (below patella)
Where does the joint capsule attach?
Around articular margins on femur - rim of tibial plateau
What is the capsules purpose?
Prevent too much flexion and extension
What are the parts of the menisci?
What is its function?
What holds the edge of it down?
Medial & lateral - semilunar shape pieces of fibrocartilage - anterior and posterior horns
Deepen and stabilise tibial plateau
Coronary ligament
Origin and insertion of Posterior cruciate ligament?
Post part of intercondylar eminence to lateral side of medial femoral condyle
Function of ACL and PCL?
Prevent tibial translation - ACL, anterior glide - PCL, posterior glide
Other ligaments of the knee?
Medial and lateral coronary ligaments - oblique and arcuate popliteal ligaments - menisco-femoral ligaments
Origin and insertion of Medial collateral ligament?
Partly attaches to medial meniscus & associated with coronary ligament - comes from medial epicondyle, blends with upper end of medial tibia
Origin and insertion of lateral collateral ligament?
Comes from lateral epicondyle to head of fibula
Purpose of MCL and LCL?
Prevent valgus and Varus
Origin and insertion of anterior cruciate ligament?
Anterior portion of intercondylar eminence to medial side of lateral femoral condyle
Limiting factors to knee flexion?
Soft end feel - soft tissue opposition, post thigh again post calf - assumes no passive insufficiency on quads
Limiting factors to knee extension?
Hard end feel - tight post ligaments (ACL&PCL) - may have passive insufficiency on hamstrings
