Knee Flashcards
Rectus femoris
Straight down the anterior surface of the thigh to patellar tendon with resisted knee extension and hip flexion.
Vastus medialis
Anterior medial side of the thigh just above the superomedial patella. Resist knee extension near full extension.
Vastus lateralis
Slightly distal to the greater trochanter down the anterolateral aspect of the thigh to superolateral patella. Resist knee extension near full extension
Vastus intermedius
Deep to rectus femoris on the anteromedial distal one – third of the thigh just above the superomedial patella. Resisted knee extension near full extension
TFL
Anterolateral, between iliac crest and greater trochanter during internal rotation, flexion and abduction
Biceps femoris
Resisted knee flexion and external rotation on the posteromedial aspect of the distal thigh
Semimembranosus
Largely covered by other muscles. Tendon can be felt at posteromedial aspect of knee just deep to semitendinosus tendon with resisted knee flexion and internal rotation
Semitendinosus
Resist knee flexion and internal rotation and palpate the posterior aspect of the thigh with model in prone position and palpate on medial part.
Popliteus
Have model sitting with knee at 90 degrees, palpate deep to gastrocnemius medially on posterior proximal tibia and proceed superolaterally toward lateral epicondyle of tibia just deep to fibular contralateral ligament while model internally rotates knee.
Gastrocnemius
Get model to stand on tip toes and it’s the large muscle bulk.
Sartorius
Resist hip flexion/external rotation/abduction and knee flexion and palpate superficially from ASIS to medial tibial condyle.
Gracilis
A thin tendon on anteromedial thigh with knee flexion and resisted adduction just posterior to adductor longus and medial to semitendinosus.
