What does KKK mean?
The Ku Klux Klan
What was the attire of the KKK?
A white hood and a white robe, often created by what was available at home
They also liked to style themselves as medieval knights and called themselves wizards and dragons
The head priest, one with the most power, often didn’t have to hid his face
Who joined the KKK?
It is hard to know- a lot of people joined the Klan, including policemen and members of authority. However, the majority were average white men who worked jobs during the day
What is the KKK?
It was a huge organisation that was filled with white supremacists who believed they were doing the ‘work of god’
What did the KKK do?
-They worked in large mobs and lynched a concerning amount of black, innocent people
-They had taken control of a lot of Southern towns, and in one case, they burned down an entire town because of a lie made by a woman
-They sent out letters to men, encouraging them to join the Klan
-Held a march in Washington DC
-Murdered people
-Whip, brand, tar and feather their victims
What is known about the KKK?
By 1870, there was a branch in every southern state, and there was very few in the Northern states
It wasn’t very organised due to the amount of people in it
The most attacked state was South Carolina: in January 1871, 500 masked men attacked a county jail and lynched 8 black prisoners
What symbolised the KKK?
The Burning Cross. It provided light to their night meetings, and it symbolised that they were doing the work of God.
