Why did the American Civil War start?
1.) The Southern states wanted to keep slavery, but the North wanted to abolish it
2.) The Southern states had threatened to leave the Union and create it’s own one

To stop the Southern states from leaving and to free the millions of enslaved Black Americans in South America

What was significant about FORT SUMTER?
1.) It was where the first shots of the war were fired
2.) There was actually no casualties, apart from 2 Union soldiers who were accidentally killed in the evacuation of the site
3.) The fort was in Confederate hands and after numerous attempts to seize control from the Unions, the Confederates were able to retain it until 1865

It is in Charleston Harbour, South Carolina
What is significant about PORT ROYAL?
It guarded one of the Confederate Forts, Fort Beauregard, which was later abandoned when it became clear that the Port Royal could not keep the Union fleet out

What was significant about the battle of Gettysburg?
1.) It was considered a turning point for the Unionists due to the surrender of the Confederates the following day in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and after a series of losses to the Confederates
2.) It was the largest battle of the Civil War, and also the largest battle ever fought in North America
3.) There were 23000 Union casualties, and 28000 Confederate casualties, making it one of the bloodiest battles ever fought
