KK1-4, KK14: Digital Systems & Types of Accessibility Aids Flashcards
What are digital systems?
Either a single device, or a collection of devices on a network, digital systems transform data into information, providing an output that meets the needs of the user.
What are examples of digital systems?
Examples of digital systems include:
- Smartphones
- Smart fridges
- Wearable technology (e.g. smartwatches)
- Desktop and laptop devices
- Drones
- Nanosatellites
What is an emerging technology?
Emerging technologies are recent technologies that are perceived of being capable of making change within society.
Define ‘Robot’ and name the 4 components.
A robot is a device that can complete a specific task wit autonomy. A robot’s 4 components are:
1. A Power Source - Provides energy for robot to function
2. Actuators - Used to control and move the robot
3. Sensors - To collect data from their environment
4. Software - Provides instructions to the robot
Define “Assistive Technologies” and name a few examples.
Assistive technologies are technologies that allow an individual or organization to complete a task they would not be able to complete without human intervention, or a technology that makes day-to-day activities easier.
Examples include:
- Accessible Aids
- Cognitive Aids
- Electric Wheelchairs
Explain what a ‘GPS’ is.
A Global Positioning System, or GPS, makes use of a network of satellites that provide location and time data to any connected device. They are operated and controlled by the US Government, and have a location range between 1 and 10 metres.
What is an assistive technology?
An assistive technology
is any technology that allows an individual or organisation to complete
a task that they would not normally be able to complete, or that makes it easier or safer to complete day-to-day activities.
What are the first 3 types of assistive technologies?
First 3 types of assistive technologies:
- Accessibility aids: Makes everyday tasks accessible to everyone, especially the disabled (e.g. text-to-speech software).
- Cognitive aids: Intended for people with a physical, cognitive or emotional impairment (e.g. ‘brain training’ games to help a person’s memory).
- Personal emergency response systems: Can send an alert to a nominated phone number, or an alarm when triggered (e.g. a smoker detector in a house).
What are the last 2 types of assistive technologies?
Last 2 types of assistive technologies:
- Home automation: Home automation systems employ sensors and actuators to complete day-to-day tasks in the
home (e.g. controlling energy systems in the house).
- Mobility aids: To aid people with disabilities (e.g. electric wheelchair)
