Kingdom Protista Flashcards
Protozoan
First animal
How do one celled organisms move?
Flagella- tale like structure
Cilia- little hairs
Ameboid- structure stretched itself (pseudopodia- fake foot)
Slime Mold Dormancy
Sclerotia-dry dormancy
Sporangia-produces spores
Sporangia
Produces spores, happens when it runs out of FOOD
Sclerotia
Dry dormancy, happens when it runs out of WATER
Golden Brown and Yellow Green (algae)
Diatoms and Desmids
- cell wall- silica (what glass is made of)
- diatomaceous earth- fossil like
- every single body of water has a unique diatom
Dinoflagotae (algae)
(Dino- terrible, flagellate-whip)
- 2 flagella
- reddish orange pigment
- “red tide” when there are lots and the water looks red
- requires warm water and lots of nutrients
- causes large scale fish deaths
Eugleniophyta (algae)
Can switch between autotrophic and heterotrophic
Euglena- no cell wall, eye spot- chlorophyll
Brown Algae
Large seaweed, auger, edible, marine
Red algae
Marine, edible, carrageenan (prevents ice crystals from forming)
Green algae
Chlorophyll a and b (same chlorophyll that is found in plants)
Largest group
Cyanobacteria types?
Anabaena and Oscillatoria (looks like threads)
Protista: common representative?
Plant-like: algae
Animal-like: protozoan
Fungi-like: slime mold/water mold
Protista: prokaryotic or eukaryotic?
Eukaryotic (they have nucleus)
Protista: number of cells?
