Kingdom Fungi Flashcards
How do fungi grow?
Hypha sections come together to make a string like structure
Hypha then weave together like fabric to create fungal tissue
Spores
Structures that are produced but they go into dormancy
Myc?
Means fungi
Zygomycetes
Simplest (ex. Bread-mold and pilobolous)
Pilobolous special requirements
- To grow- spores have to pass through digestive system of a grazing herbivore
- To shoot- will only shoot at light
Ascmyceles
Truffle, morels, Dutch elms disease, chestnut blight, food spoilage mold
Basidiomycetes
Basidio- club (because they look like clubs)
Mushroom, shelf fungi, puffballs
Deuteromycetes
Imperfect fungi and asexual
Penicillium, athletes foot, ring worm
Mutualisms
Mycorrhizae
Lichen
Mycorrhizae
Has a relationship with about 80% of plants
Benefits received:
-fungi: sugar from photosynthesis (assists in decomposing)
-plant: available nutrients (esp. Phosphorus and metals)
Lichens
Fungi + algae or Cyanobacteria
Benefits received:
-fungi: sugars
-a or c: moist home
Forms of lichens
Crustation- looks crusty
Foliose- looks like leaves
Fruticose- looks shrubby
Why we need fungi?
Bread, alcohol and cheese
Penicillin and antibiotics
Fungi: common representative?
Mushroom, mold, yeast
Fungi: prokaryotic or eukaryotic?
Eukaryotic
