Kingdom: Fungi Flashcards
How do fungi get their nutrients?
they release their digestive enzymes into their surroundings and then absorb the digested nutrients into their cells
are fungi heterotrophs?
yes
Are fungi decomposers?
Yes, they are the second best in the world
Are fungi multicellular or unicellular?
Most are multicellular but yeast is unicellular
what can be done by spore production or other means?
Asexual reproduction
what is it called when a piece of mycelium breaks and forms into a new individual?
Fragmentation
What is done by yeast that involves a smaller cell that develops while attached to the parent cell?
Budding
During the budding process, the smaller cell is eventually pinched off the parent cell to produce a new individual, what happens as a result of this?
The cells form a tiny bud scar every time a bud pinches off from its parent cell
What is the name for the parasitic fungi that “controls” the mind of insects, like ants, and has them explode and infect the rest of their colony?
Cordyceps
What is a mould, used to create penicilllin, discovered by accident, likes growing on rotten fruits that are citric or have a high acid content?
Penicillium
What did McCain’s try to do to prevent the Potato Wart and why isn’t it currently being used?
They used genetically modified organisms. they found a type of beetle that was immune to the disease and took some of its DNA and injected it into the nucleus of the potato and grew new potatoes that resulted in greater profit. They were mainly grown in PEI. They lasted longer in storage and it allowed us to ship them to Africa. however people in Europe found out and protested so McCain’s had to stop doing this.
What is:
a composite organism that always consists of a fungus and a photosynthetic organism, has a symbiotic relationship (mutualism and a win-win situation [algae gets to live on land and fungus gets sugar])
Lichens
