Kingdom Animalia Flashcards
Eumetozoa
True tissues
Ex. Everything but sponges
Define parazoa
No true cells and no symmetry
Ex. Sponges
Spherical symmetry:
If divided in half any way it will always have identical halves
Radial symmetry
Symmetrical along spokes of an imaginary wheel/on the planes
Ex. Anemone
Bilateral symmetry
Divides in half only one way to get 2 equal sides. Has distinct top, bottom, front, back, etc
Ex: humans, worms
Asymmetrical
No symmetry
Ex sponge
Advantages of bilateral symmetry
- organs located in different body parts
- efficient movements
- higher mobility
- cephalization
- appendages on either side
Anterior
Posterior
Dorsal
Ventral
Front
Back
Top
Bottom
Ectoderm
Outer layer…skin and sensory systems
Endoderm
Inner layer… Digestive and respiratory systems
Mesoderm
Middle layer… Muscles bones blood
Acoelomates
No body cavity, all 3 layers in contact
Ex flatworms
Pseudocolomates
Body cavity between mesoderm and endoderm
Ex nematodes
Coelomates
Body cavity develops within mesoderm
Ex us
Advantages of a coelum
- faster distribution of materials
- long digestive tract –> better nutrient absorption
- organs arranged in different positions–> better reproduction
- flexible body/better motility
