Kinetics and Thermodynamics Flashcards
What is energy?
Energy must be transferred to an object in order to perform work on or to heat an object.
What does the conservation of law state?
That the energy can be converted in form, but not created or destroyed.
What are the units of energy?
Joules (J)
Who held experiments about energy?
James Prescott Joule’s
What does endothermic and exothermic mean?
Endothermic means that its hotter than the surroundings and exothermic means that it is cooler than the surroundings.
What are examples of each forms of energy?
-Kinetic energy
-Electrical
-Nuclear
-Sound
-Light
-Heat
-Chemical
Kinetic energy= energy of a moving body potential storing kinetic energy.
Electrical= energy from the flow of electrons.
Nuclear= energy from radioactivity.
Sound= energy from pressure waves.
Light= energy from light waves.
Heat= energy from heat.
Chemical= energy stored in bonds.
What is bond breaking?
Bond breaking needs energy so its endothermic.
What is bond forming?
Bond forming gives out energy so its exothermic.
What is Hess’s Law?
Hess’s law states that if a reaction can take place by more than one route and they would reach the final position.
