Kinetics Flashcards
Rate of reaction =
Change in concentration/time taken for change to happen
Activation energy
The minimum kinetic energy that colliding molecules must possess for the collision to be successful and result in the formation of product molecules
What does a catalyst do?
It speeds up a reaction by providing an alternative path with a lower activation energy
The 3 requirements of collision theory
Particles must collide to react, reactants must possess a certain minimum amount of energy (the activation energy), and particles must collide with the correct orientation (steric effect)
6 ways to increase rate
Increase surface area of solids, increase temperature, shine light, add catalyst, increase pressure of gases, increase concentration of reactants
Homogeneous
In the same state
Heterogeneous
In different states
Enzymes
Biological catalysts
5 measurable physical changes
Time taken to produce a certain volume of gas, time taken to produce enough solid to hide a cross, change in colour (measured using a colorimeter or light sensor), change in pH, and change in electrical conductivity (more ions = more conductivity)
