Green chemistry Flashcards
Fossil fuel
A mixture of hydrocarbons laid down over millions of years through the anaerobic decay of animal and vegetation matter, used as a fuel that releases carbon dioxide when combusted
Biofuel
Fuel made from renewable organic materials like sugar, grain or vegetable oils
Carbon footprint
A measure of the impact human activities have on the environment in terms of amount of carbon dioxide produced. Measured in tonnes of carbon dioxide per event.
Transesterification
A reaction between an ester and an alcohol that produces a different ester and a different alcohol
Atom economy (with equation)
The % of atoms in the reactants present in the desired product: mass of atoms in desired product/ mass of atoms in reactants x 100%
Biodegradable
Bacteria cause the decomposition of the organic material to carbon dioxide or methane and water
Photolysis
The breaking of a bond by light
Ozone/oxygen reactions in the ozone layer
O3 (+ 200-300nm UV) -> O2 + O.
O2 (+ 180-240nm UV) -> O. + O.
O. + O2 -> O3 (delta H = -600 kJ mol-1)
CFC reactions in the ozone layer
CF2Cl2 (+UV) -> CF2Cl. + Cl.
Cl. + O3 -> ClO. + O2
ClO. + O. -> Cl. + O2
So overall: 2O3 -> 3O2
Nitric oxide reactions in the ozone layer
NO + O3 -> NO2 + O2
NO2 + O. -> O2 + NO
So overall: 2O3 -> 3O2
Free radical
An uncharged species with an unpaired electron that is used to form a covalent bond - highly reactive
Green chemistry
The utilisation of a set of principles that reduces or eliminates the use or generation of hazardous substances in the design, manufacture and application of chemical products
Relative greenhouse factor of a gas
Compares the effects that different gases have in absorbing infrared radiation compared with carbon dioxide
Global warming potential (GWP)
Determined by their relative greenhouse factor and their half-life in the atmosphere
Carbon neutral (fuel)
When the amount of carbon dioxide absorbed when the raw material is grown, or the fuel is formed, equals the amount of carbon dioxide produced when it is manufactured and burnt
