Refers to the thorax of the trunk which contains the 12 thoracic vertebrae and rib cage
Trunk
Part of the axial body located inferior to the neck and superior to the pelvis
Upper extremity
Portion of the appendicular body that is composed of the hand, forearm, arm, and shoulder girdle on that side of the body
Anatomic position
Reference position with person standing erect, facing forward, arms at their sides, palms facing forward and digits extended
Angular movement
Synonym for axial movement
Anterior
Used to describe a structure or point on the body that is closer to the front of the body
Anteroposterior axis
An axis that runs from anterior to posterior
Axial movement
Any movement in which the body part moves about or around an axis
Axis (pl. axes)
An imaginary straight line around which motion occurs
Axis of rotation
A synonym for axis
Cardinal axis
The axis to a cardinal plane
Cardinal plane
The 3 major planes that describe space (sagittal, frontal, and transverse)
Circular movement
Synonym for axial movement, used when a body part moves in a circular fashion around the axis
Coronal plane
Synonymous with the frontal plane
Deep
Used to describe a structure of the body that is located farther from the surface of the body
Distal
Used to describe a structure or point on the appendicular body that is farther from the axial body
Dorsal
Synonymous with posterior though more correctly refers to the hard firmer aspect of a body part
Fibular
Refers to the lateral side of the leg
Frontal-horizon axis
An axis oriented in the frontal plane and is horizontal (synonym for mediolateral axis)
Frontal plane
Cardinal plane that is oriented vertically that divides the body into anterior and posterior positions.
Horizontal plane
Synonymous with transverse plane as it’s the only horizontal plane that divides the body
Inferior
Used to describe a structure or point on the axial body that is lower in location (opposite of superior)
Lateral
Used to describe a structure or point on the body that is farther from the midline of the body (opposite is medial)
Mechanical axis
Synonymous with axis
Medial
Used to describe a structure or point on the body that is closer to the midline of the body (opposite is lateral)
Mediolateral axis
An axis that runs from medial to lateral (left to right or vice versa)
Midsagittal plane
The sagittal plane that divides the body into equal left and right halves
Oblique axis
The description given to the axis that corresponds to an oblique plane
Oblique plane
Any plane that is not a perfect cardinal plane
Plane
A flat surface that cuts through space, describing a dimension of space-important because motion occurs within a plane
Posterior
Used to describe a structure or point of the body that is closer to the back
Proximal
Used to describe a structure or point on the appendicular body that is closer to the axial body
Radial
Refers to the lateral side of the forearm
