kidneys Flashcards
what is excretion ?
process of seperating WASTE from BODY fluid and ELIMINATING them
what are the three key parts of the kidneys ?
- removing waste
- balancing blood pH
- maintaing water balance
what is deamination ?
the liver removing amino groups from protiens which forms ammonia ( very toxic )
how is urea formed ?
the liver combining ammonia ( made in deamination ) with carbon dioxide.
how is uric acid formed ?
from the breakdown of nucleic acids.
what are renal arteries ?
they brach off of the aorta and enter your kidneys.
processes of water leaving the body…
filtered water enters kidneys - flows through ureters - go to the bladder ( for storage ) - hits the urinary sphincter ( at the base of the bladder ) - releases into the urethra - leaves the body
what are the three layers of the kidneys ?
- cortex - the OUTside
- medulla - the MIDDLE
- renal pelvis - INNER chamber ( funnels urine to ureter)
where is urine produced ?
the nephrons in the renal cortex and renal medulla.`
what are the three phases of urine formation ?q
- filtration ( cortex )
- reabsorption ( cortex and medulla )
- secretion ( cortex and medulla )
what is the renal artery ?
it carries blood INTO nephron.
what is secretion ?
movement of excess waste from BLOOD into the NEPHRON through the distal tube and collecting duct.
