What kind of housing is available in Nairobi?

  • Kibera is made up of INFORMAL HOUSING- it is not legally recognised and so an be moved/demolished if the government chose to. They have no SECURITY OF TENURE
  • roughly 1 million people live in Kibera, in make-shift houses with no electricity, running water or sanitation. Police refuse to go into the settlement, therefor crime is high. HIV infection rates are high. There are no roads and railway line run through the settlement.
  • Minitori Ridge is a wealthy neighbourhood 3 miles away from Kibera, the average house price here is £240,000. Most of the residents are descendants of Europeans

  • Kenyan government and UN have agreed to rehouse people in blocks of flats
  • to rehouse everyone it will cost an estimated $1.2 billion and will take at least 9 years
  • The new apartments will also have schools and shops nearby
  • The first 1500 people to be rehoused were moved into 300 apartments in 2009
  • The flats have an affordable monthly rent of $10 Kiberian wages two dollars a day
