Where is it Ipswich located?
Ipswich is located in Suffolk, in the East of England. It has a population of 165,000 people
What changes have happened in retail in Ipswich town centre?
- A number of shops have closed down in Ipswich town centre, example I Littlewoods in tower ramparts, co-op on carr Street, Woolworths on Carr street, JJB on carr Street
- as a result more and more people are not travelling into the town centre.
- car parts are expensive and so people are less inclined to visit the town centre.
Changes in Ipswich’s shopping retail
• The opening of more out of town retail park, examples include:
- Futura park-John Lewis and Waitrose
-anglia retail park - B&Q, mamas and papas, Costa, comet
- Cardinal Park – Cineworld, Frankie & Benny’s, chimichangas
- Ravenswood – Tommy carvery, Frankie and Benny’s
- Ransomes Euro Park – B and M, Lexus
- Suffolk retail Park – next, the range, Dunhelm mill
• there has been improvements in bus routes for example super route 66 to get to these parks
• carparks make it easier for people to do all the shopping in one place. Easier for families
• easier for delivery trucks
Where are the supermarkets in Ipswich found?
- most supermarkets are found along the main roads leading into Ipswich
- they are located here because the roads allow good access for delivering goods and for customers
- The largest are found on the edge of town close to the A12 and A14
- they are located here because they can then be accessed by people living outside the town. The land is cheaper on the edge of the town so the supermarkets can have big carparks
- some supermarkets are found in the town centre but these are small and do not offer the variety that the large supermarkets can.
- there are some supermarkets found on the big housing estates that Stoke.
How has the location of the supermarkets changed in Ipswich?
- in the past, most supermarkets were located close to the CBD. This was good for people who live close to the town centre but people who lived on the edge of town had a long way to travel for their food
- supermarkets like Tesco and Asda then chose to go to the edge of town; this was good for people with cars as they could use their cars to carry shopping.
How have people been affected by the changes in Ipswich?
• in the last few years, some supermarkets like Tesco and Waitrose open small shops in the town centre. This is good for people who live and work in the centre as they have a choice of where they can shop
How are different groups of people affected by this service?
- people with cars have good access to supermarkets.
- elderly people who do not drive can you get good access to supermarkets by bus.
- people living on the big housing estates have good access to supermarkets by car or bus
