Keywords - respiration Flashcards
Aerobic respiration
Respiration that requires free oxygen to enable release of energy from glucose
Anaerobic respiration
Respiration that releases energy from glucose or other foods without free oxygen
Glycolysis
Initial stage in cellular respiration where glucose is broken down in cytoplasm to form 2 pyruvate mols.
Link reaction
Process linking glycolysis + Krebs cycle -> hydrogen + CO2 removed from pyruvate to form acetylcoenzyme A in matrix of mitochondria
Krebs cycle
Series of aerobic reactions in matrix of mitochondria by which energy is released through oxidation of acetylcoenzyme A
Oxidative phosphorylation
Formation of ATP via electron transport chain (ATP synthase) in mitochondria during aerobic respiration
Pyruvate
3 carbon compound produced from breakdown of glucose in glycolysis + used in link reaction
Acetylcoenzyme A
2 carbon compound produced from breakdown of pyruvate in the link reaction + used in Krebs cycle
Mitochondrial matrix
Gel-like liquid within inner membrane of mitochondria, where link reaction + Krebs cycle take place
Cristae
Folds of inner mitochondrial membrane that are site of electron transport chain + oxidative phosphorylation
