Keywords - photosynthesis Flashcards
Chloroplast
Organelle in which photosynthesis reactions occur. Made up of thylakoids suspended in stroma.
Thylakoid
Flattened membrane bound sacs found in chloroplasts that contain pigment chlorophyll. Site of light dependent reaction.
Photoionization
Process in which light energy is absorbed by chlorophyll -> 2 electrons excited to a higher energy level + leave chlorophyll to be passed along electron transport chain.
Photolysis
Process in which water mol. is split by light energy
Chemiosmosis
Theory that explains how ATP is produced via ATP synthase during light dep. stage, due to protein gradient being created across thylakoid membrane.
ATP synthase
Enzyme (channel protein) which catalyses formation of ATP (ADP + Pi) due to protons moving through it during light dep. stage.
Rubisco
Enzyme which catalyses reaction to join one mol. of CO2 to RuBP during Calvin Cycle
Triose phosphate (TP)
3-carbon mol. formed in Calvin cycle that can be used in plant cells to create organic mols eg. glucose, starch, cellulose (some used to regenerate RuBP)
Glycerate 3-phosphate (GP)
3-carbon mol. formed in Calvin cycle (CO2 + RuBP) that is phosphorylated + reduced to form TP.
Ribulose bisphosphate (RuBP)
5-carbon mol. formed in Calvin cycle by regeneration of TP (using ATP)
