Iron Curtain
Churchill forcefully proclaimed that the Soviet Union was establishing an “iron curtain” between the free countries of Western Europe and the Communist Eastern Europe.
Containment Policy
The long term implementation of military, economic, and diplomatic strategies in order to “contain” the spread of communism.

Truman Doctrine
The U.S would support any democratic nation resisting communism.
Marshall Plan
American plan that spent $12 billion for rebuilding Western Europe; the plan produced economic revival that helped starve off the growth of communists.
Berlin Airlift
American airplanes flew in supplies for 15 months, causing Soviet Union to call off the blockade.
NATO
(North Atlantic Treaty Organization) A military alliance between U.S and West Euro.
Warsaw Pact
A military pact between soviets and their satellite countries.
Blacklist
Various private agencies named individuals influenced by communism. Those named could not find work until the 1960’s.
McCarthysim
Accusations by Senator Joseph McCarthy claiming certain people were secretly Communists.
Domino Theory
If one country fell to communism others will follow; this was used to justify Vietnam.
Sputnik
First artificial satellite, launched by the Soviet Union. The fact the Soviets did this before the U.S. shocked many Americans.
Satellite Countries
Eastern European countries under the control of the Soviet Union after WW2; the Soviets argued they liberated them from the Nazis and had the right to influence developments there.
