Describe the impact of horses to native Americans
Horses enabled native Americans in the Great Basin to hunt with greater success and strengthened them militarily. The horses were introduced to them by the Spanish.
Describe the spread of diseases
Small pox and measles were introduced to the native Americans reducing their population very significantly.
Describe the Encomienda system
Native Americans were marshaled to work on plantations for agriculture and precious minerals. The encomienda system was later replaced natives with African slave labor.
Describe the major differences between Natives and Europeans.
1) Gender- Natives were matriarchal while Europeans were patriarchal.
2) Land- Natives did not have a concept of landownership as Europeans did. Land was only something to be cultivated and not to be owned by any individual or entity.
3) Religion- Natives were polytheistic while Europeans practiced various forms of Christianity.

He was against Native American rights and justified their encroachment with Christianity.
Bartolommeo de las Casas
Advocated that Natives have as many rights as all other men. He was active in destroying the encomienda system.
