What does representation mean?
The process by which the media represents reality

What are stereotypes?
• A popular understanding of representation.
• They are easy to convey and understand
• Used for quick recognition
What is ideology?
• A set of beliefs / values that add up to our view of the world
• When an idea is portrayed frequently, it is adopted by the masses and becomes the dominant ideology.
What does Hegemonic mean?
When the opinion conforms to an ideology, it is the dominant belief in a set of ideas.
What does Pluralistic mean?
When ideas subvert the dominant ideology
What is moral panic?
When the media makes something seem worse then it actually is
What are Technical Codes?
A system of signs which create meaning in a media text.
E.g. camera framing, camera movements, juxtapositions, fonts, sounds, lighting, editing, mise en scene, facial expressions, body language, locations, colour …
What is Mies En Scene?
‘Placing on stage’
The design or arrangement of everything as it appears in the framing of a film.
What are Juxtapositions?
The comparison of two objects or subject side by side.
It is used to examine various elements
What are Semiotics?
• The study of signs and their meaning to society
• It explains the way signs are used to represent and relay information to the audience

Through the use of technical codes, selection, cultural codes, semiotics

What is the difference between race and ethnicity?
• Race refers to physical characteristics such as skin colour
• Ethnicity is defined by culture and national customs
What is a media industry?
The media industry can be defined as a varied collection of organisations that share the production, publication and distribution of media texts. Examples of media organisations include:
