Critical social psychology
Concerned with inequality and injustice in society. Typically politically motivated and aims to end oppression of minority and marginalised groups.
Examines psychology for ways it contributes to injustice and undesirable social orders.
Uses qualitative methods based on linguistics instead of statistical methods.
Critical psychology term refers to work that assesses common assumptions in psychology to make positive changes
Deindividuation
Deindividuation is when people lose their sense of individual identity, and therefore responsibility.
Can be used to explain aggression occurring in groups. People feel their behaviour is not being observed on individual level, they take on role of the group.
Can occur as part of a crowd
Can occur as identifying with of a role, eg wearing a uniform.
Altruism
When we act to promote someone else’s welfare even at risk or cost to ourselves.
Shared identity
Part of social identity theory (tajifel and turner)
When a person takes on the identity of a group
Conspiracy theories
A belief that an event is result of a plot by a covert group or organisation.
Multiple actors working together as an evil plot.
Sexism
Prejudice or discrimination based on a persons sex or gender. Usually affecting women or girls
Hostile sexism
An antagonistic attitude toward women often viewed as trying to control men through feminism or seduction
Ambivalent sexism theory
An ideology comprised of nothing hostile and benevolent prejudice toward women.
Hostile, women are viewed as controlling men through feminism or sexuality
Benevolent, chivalrous attitude towards women which casts women as weak and in need of men’s protection.
Questionnaire called ambivalent sexism inventory
