key words and funcionalist view on crime Flashcards
define crime
any law breaking behaviour
define deviance
any behaviour that does not conform to the norms and expectations of a particular society or social group
define social control
methods used to persuade or force individuals to conform to the dominant norms, values and laws of society
what does durkheim argue
crime is normal and inevitable in society.
not everyone is socialised equally.
e.g. underage drinking is illegal but due to peer pressure people participate
what ELSE does durkheim say
crime is inevitable in modern societies as the rules that govern behaviour = less clear = risk of anomie = increasing c&d
what does he mean by crime is dysfunctional
- Too much = collective conscience is not strong enough
- Too little - collective conscience is too strong = no room for social change
What are some positive functions of crime
- strengthens collective values.
when crime is committed society comes together to condemn criminal behaviour and re enforce right from wrong.
