Conflict theory on crime Flashcards
What do control theorists argue
humans suffer from weaknesses that make them unable to resist the temptation from turning to crime.
- this approach is the opposite of functionalism they want to find out what drives people to crime
What does Hirschi argue
social order is based on shared values and socialisation through institutions integrating people into society
identitfy and explain two of the social bonds control theorists identitifed
- Belief = shared moral beliefs, respectt for the rights of others or obedience to the law
- Attatchment = connections with family, friends and community
give the other two social bonds of control
- Involvement = people being involved or they are busy e.g. clubs, school activities, sport
- Commitment = no wish to risk through crime - education, work, building a future
what do they conclude from this
If you increase social bonds, the crime rates will be lowered.
- They also recognise the importance of socialisation and social control in maintaining a cohesive society
GIve two criticisms of this theory
- It doesn’t explain the varieties of Crime and Deviance
- Don’t recognise it is possible to be deviant and have tight social bonds
