What is a Nation?
a large body of people united by common descent, history, culture, or language, inhabiting a particular country or territory
What is a Republic?
a state in which supreme power is held by the people and their elected representatives, and which has an elected or nominated president rather than a monarch
What is a Constitutional Monarchy?
A political system where an unelected monarch shares power with a democratically elected government
What is a Military Coup?
A change in government where the military suddenly takes power, usually involving a degree of force to remove an established politician or figurehead
What is Socialism?
Influenced by the 19th century writings of Karl Marx among others, argued for the redistribution of wealth as a means of creating a more equal society, with a bigger role for the state in managing the economy
What is Anarchism?
A radical ideology that advocates a ‘stateless society’ where citizens behave in a voluntary and co-operative manner rather than under the control of a ‘repressive’ state or government
What is Syndicalism?
A revolutionary ideology based on radical socialist principles - control of business and industry by different ‘syndicates’ of workers as opposed to control from the centralised state
What are Deputies?
The official term given to elected representatives of the Constituent Cortes (Spain’s parliamentary body)
What is Anti-clericalism?
Policies that seek to limit the influence of organised religion in political life and seek to restrict its influence over the lives of ordinary citizens
What is Secular?
A situation or organisation that is not connected to or influenced by religion (e.g. education)
What is Disestablishment?
To end the privileged status of a religion within a specific government or political unit
What is Conservatism?
The belief of resisting change while maintaining the traditions and existing practices of society
- if change is to occur, it must be slowly and cautiously managed by those in authority
What is Nationalisation?
Where a government or state takes over the running and management of land or industry from private interest
