right - ppl believed it was a threat to the Republic = proof the left wanted soviet-style gov
rw press said it showed left didn’t respect democracy
Radicalisation on the Right
middle class moved to the right, over-sensationalised reports of lefts actions but also because of threat to their businesses
elements of CEDA calling for fascist dictatorship, Gil Robles publicly praised Hitler + the ‘econ miracle’
JAP (youth for popular action) = rw group + wore fascist symbols + military style uniforms
Gil Robles referred to as ‘the chief’
CEDA gains ground
Gil Robles argued that CEDA needed to be more involved to stand up to revolutionary left
May 1935 - Lerroux + the President give in = Gil Robles promoted to minister of war
Military Preparation
Gil Robles (minister of war) promoted rw officers to key roles + began rearmament programme
appointed General Franco (known for his hate of the Republic) as chief of general staff + Joaquin Fanjul (well known monarchist) also promoted
Franco + Fanjul purged army of Republican supporters
Gil Robles other military policies:
- munitions factory under military guard
- army training increased in strong union areas
- arms production increase
Impact on the Left
- lw groups started to cooperate with idea of hoping to win an election by alliance
- oct revolution of 1934 weakened left’s legitimacy in attempting to overthrow a democratically elected government
