Key Vocabulary Flashcards
Boiling
The change of state from a liquid to a solid
Compound
Asubstance that is composed of two or more different elements
Compressed
Squeezed into a smaller space. Gases can be compressed, but liquids and most solids cannot be compressed
Concentrated
Is a solution that contains a large amount of solute relative to the amount that could dissolve
Condensation
Formation of liquid when a gas cools down
Condensing
The change of state from a gas to a liquid
Crystallisation
Is a separation technique that is used to separate a solid that has dissolved in a liquid and made a solution
Diffuse
Supread throughout another substance
Diffusion
The spreading of one substance through another due to the movement of their particles
Dilute
Is a solution that contains a small amount of solute relative to the amount that could dissolve
Dissolve
A solid becomes incorporated into a liquid to form a solutin
Distillation
The action of purifying a liquid by a process of heating and cooling
Disperse
Distribute or spread over a wide area
Evaporation
The change of state from a liquid to a gas. Evaporation occurs only from the surface of the liquid
Filter
To pass a substance through a device to remove unwanted material
Filtrate
A liquid that has passed through a filter
Freezing
The change of state from a liquid to a solid
Gas
State of matter with no fixed shape or volume
Homogeneous
Detonating a process involving substances in the same phase (solid, liquid or gaseous)
Infiltration
Process by which water on the ground surface enters the soil
Insoluble
Does not dissolve
Kinetic energy
Energy particles have to move.
Liquid
State of matter that has a fixed volume, but no fixed shape
Mixture
Contains two or more substances that are not chemically combined
Particle model of matter
A model that explains the behaviour and properties of each of the states of matter
Particles
The individual parts that make up all matter. (These particles are called atoms.)
Precipitation
Rain, snow, sleet, or hail that falls to or condenses on the ground.
Precipitate
An insoluble solid that emerges from mixing solutions together
Pressure
The push of a substance against another. Eg. a gas exerts pressure on the container it is in because the particles in the gas collide with (push on) the sides of the container.
Pure Substance
Substances that are made of only one type of atom or only one type of molecule
Purify
Remove contaminants from
Run Off
Rain that flows off from the land in streams and oceans.
Saturated Solution
A solution containing the maximum amount of solute that can be dissolved at a given temperature
