Geneva accords 1954
Partition of Vietnam along the seventeenth parallel. Elections would be held in 1956 to reunify country. N Vietnam controlled by Ho Chi Minh, S Vietnam controlled by Bao Dai and then President Diem.
Bao Dai
Initial leader of a Vietnam after Geneva Accords in 1954. Replaced by President Diem
President Diem
President after Bao Dai. Part of a corrupt and repressive regime but was staunchly anti-Communist. He was assassinated in 1963.
NLF (National Liberation Front)
An organisation sought to remove American influence.
Viet Cong
Military wing of the NLF
Guerilla Warfare
Use of hit and run tactics by small mobile groups of irregular forces operating in territory controlled by a hostile, regular force.
Domino Theory
The theory that if one country in a specific area fell to communism, then another and more will follow that country and fall into Communism
President Kennedy
Democratic party political leader of the twentieth century; he was president from 1961 to 1963. His election began a period of great optimism in the United States.
General Westmoreland
A distinguished veteran of World War II and the Korean War, to command the U.S. Military Assistance Command in Vietnam (MACV) in June 1964. His attrition aimed to enforce heavy losses on North Vietnamese and Viet Cong
