Principles for how we should live our lives
These principles are generally shared by the majority of people in a community
Norms
specific rules/socially accepted standards that guide and govern our behaviour in particular situations
Linked to the values of that society
Moral Codes
Dependent on the key principles, beliefs and values of society
Set of rules/guidelines that a person/people follow in order to live a good and moral life
Deviance
going against the norms and values of society
Crime (legal def.)
actions forbidden by the criminal law, and can mean punishment by the legal system
Actus Reus
Guilty act - physical part of the crime
Mens Rea
Guilty mind - mental part of the crime
Sanctions
Punishment/deterrent for committing crime or negative behaviour*
*a crime, something deviant in society or both
Social Construction of Crime
The idea that crime is a product of the situation in which it takes place. Crime is dictated by what is seen as illegal in any given society
Double Jeopardy
You could not be trialled twice for the same crime (even if new evidence is found)
