Age of Viability
The time in pregnancy where the fetus has reached a point in development that it can potentially survive outside of the uterus after birth.
Amniotic Sac
Sac formed by amnion and chorion, containing fluid and the fetus.
Autosomes
Any chromosome within the body except the sex chromosomes (x and y)
Chorion
The fetal membrane closest to the interior uterine wall
Decidua
The part of the decidua that unites with chorion to form the placenta. It is shed in lochial discharge after birth
Diploid
Cell or organism containing a set of maternal and a set of paternal chromosomes. 46
Dizygotic
Fetuses that develop from two fertilized ova, fraternal twins
Fertilization
The union of an ovum and sperm
Gametogenesis
The development of a sex cell, such as an ovum or sperm
Germ Layers
Three primary layers, ectoderm, mesoderm, and endoderm. Each develops into different part of the growing embryo
Haploid
A single set of chromosomes that are not paired. 23
Monozygotic
Two fetuses that develop from a single divided, fertilized ovum. Identical Twins.
Oogenesis
The process of mitosis in ovum
Placenta
A specialized disk shaped organ that connects the fetus to the uterine wall for gas, nutrient, and waste exchanges.
Spermatogenesis
The process by which mature spermatozoa are formed and during which the number of chromosomes is reduced by half
