the threat of substantial loss off life substantial impact upon life or damage to property that can be caused by an event
what is a disaster?
a disaster occurs as a result of a hazard
what are natural hazards?
events which are perceived to be a threat to people the built environment and the natural environment
what are the common characteristics of natural hazards?
each has clear origins and distinctive effects
little or no warning
exposure to risk may be involuntary
most damage and loss of life occurs shortly after hazard
the scale and impact requires an emergency response
what is risk?
the exposure of people to a hazardous event
what is vulnerability?
the geographical conditions that increases the susceptibility of a community to a hazard
what does the hazards of place model show?
the model shows the risk and vulnerability and the factors which contribute to it
what is perception?
the way in which an individual or group views the threat of a hazardous event
what are the factors which influence perception of hazards?
family situation socio-economic status level of education religion,cultural background personal values past experience
what is resilience?
the ability of communities to be able to utilise available resources to respond to withstand and recover from the effects of events
