Key responses to natural hazards Flashcards
what is adaptation?
the attempts of people or communities to live with hazardous events
what is fatalism
people cannot influence or shape the outcome so therefore they do not mitigate against it
what is fear?
the perception of the hazard is such that people feel so vulnerable to an event that they can no longer face living in the area
what are primary impacts?
the effects of a hazard that result directly from the event
what are secondary impacts?
these are the effects that result from the primary impacts
what is duration?
the length of time the hazard lasts for
what is magnitude ?
the strength of the hazard
what is predictability?
some hazards are easier to predict than others
what is regularity?
if hazards happen often and in quick succession
what is speed of onset?
if the peak of the hazard arrives first or quickly
what is spacial concentration?
where hazards are located or created
what is areal extent?
if the hazard covers a large area
