Key Terms Flashcards
Synovial Fluid
A clear and slippery liquid that lubricates the joint and prevents the bones rubbing together
Cartilage
A tough but flexible tissue that acts as a buffer between the bones and prevents rubbing and cause friction
Joint capsule
Tissue that stops the synovial fluid from escaping, encloses, supports and holds together the bone
Synovial membrane
The lining inside the joint that secretes synovial fluid
Bursae
A sac filled with fluid, floating inside the bone an which prevents friction between the tendon and the bone
Tendons
Very strong non elastic cords that attach muscles to bone
Ligaments
Bonds of elastic fibre that attach bone to bone which keeps the joint stable by restricting movement
Tidal Volume
The normal amount of air inhaled or exhaled per breath. Tidal volume increases with exercise.
Residual Volume
The amount of air that remains in the lungs after maximal expiration which does not change with exercise.
Vital Capacity
The largest volume of air that can be forcibly expired after the deepest possible inhalation.
