The idea that God will judge every soul’s actions and decide whether they are worthy of heaven or hell.

Eternal paradise for the believers in the presence of God.

Eternal torment for disbelievers away from God.
Purgatory
The intermediate state where souls are cleansed in order to enter heaven.
Sin
Acts against God’s laws that separate a person from God.
Original Sin
Everyone is born with a built-in urge to sin as a result of Adam and Eve’s first sin in the Garden of Eden.
Atonement
Restoring the relationship between people and God through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.
Salvation
Saving the soul, deliverance from sin and admission to heaven brought about by Jesus.
Salvation through Law / Good works
Achieving salvation by having faith and obeying God’s law.
Salvation by Grace
Salvation is given by God through faith in Jesus. Isn’t earned or deserved but a gift for the faithful.
The incarnation
The belief that God took human form in Jesus Christ. It is also the belief that God in Christ is active in the Church and in the world.
The crucifixion
Jesus was
crucified
on a Friday alongside two robbers, one on each side of him. A sign above his head read “King of the Jews”.
The resurrection
The Christian belief that Jesus rose from the dead on the third day after the crucifixion. The rising from the dead of believers on the Last Day in a new, or risen, life.
The ascension
For Christians, when Jesus went up to Heaven 40 days after he rose from the dead.
Mission
The vocation or calling of a religious organisation or individual to go out into the world and spread the faith.
Evangelism
A person sent on a religious mission, especially to promote Christianity in a foreign country through preaching or charitable works.
Reconciliation
The action of making one view or belief compatible with another.
Agape
Unconditional love.
General revelation
Everyone can experience God indirectly
Special revelation
When God reveals himself directly to individuals
Immanent
A personal God that is always present
Transcendent
A less personal God who is above our understanding
Moral evil
A morally negative event caused by the intentional action or inaction of a person.
Natural evil
Pain and suffering that results from natural disasters or diseases etc.
Anthropic principle
The idea that our universe seems to be fine tuned for life to exist.
Retribution
Punishment that aims to make the criminal pay for what they have done wrong
Rehabilitation
punishment that aims to reform the criminal
Deterrence
Punishment that aims to put people off committing crime
Corporal punishment
Physical punishment
Human rights
The basic rights and freedoms to which all human beings should be entitled.
Social justice
Ensuring that people are treated fairly whether they are poor or wealthy and protects their human rights.
