What is gender?
The culturally constructed roles, behaviours, and attributes that a given culture considers appropriate for men and women
E.g. Masc and fem
What is sex?
The biological + physiological characteristics that define men + women
E.g. Male and female
How have gender stereotypes been used historically against women?
Theyβve been used to subjugate women + make them unequal in power in society
What is patriarchy?
Male perspective on the running of a society, in terms of its attitudes, values + beliefs.
Males are at the centre of organisation
What does patriarchy represent?
The male perspective being at the centre of social, economic, + the political construct of a society
What is matriarchal?
Female perspective being centred instead of male
What is misogyny?
A hatred of women
Can be overt (open hatred) or covert (subtle hatred expressed in an undercover way)
What is misandry?
Hatred of men
What happens to identities as we go through life?
They change + develop due to context + experiences
How does the mass media condition us in terms of identity?
They offer role models to compare ourselves to, to try + fit into cultural norms
How do media representations affect identity?
They construct representations that show dominant ideological norm
Some ppl conform to them + some challenge them
