Q

Where does the term Palestine originate from?

A

The Greeks began using the term “Palestine” to refer to the whole region between Egypt and Phoenicia.

The term comes directly from Philistine - who were a coastal nation(Eastern Mediterranean) of people from Greece. Often warred with the local inland Israelites.

The Greeks used this name for the region being more familiar with the coastal Philistines as oppose to the inland Israelites.

Egyptian inscriptions call them “Peleset”

Egyptian direct rule ended in the 12th century BCE, when Gaza was settled by the Philistines, a seafaring people with cultural links to the Aegean, following their defeat against Ramesses III. It then became a part of the pentapolis, a league of the Philistines’ five most important city-states.

Military Occupation

A

also called belligerent occupation or simply occupation, is the temporary control exerted by a ruling power’s military apparatus over a sovereign territory that is outside of the legal boundaries of that ruling power’s own sovereign territory.[1][2][3][4] The controlled territory is then known as the occupied territory, with the ruling power being the occupant.[5] Occupation is distinguished from annexation and colonialism on the basis that it is a power structure that the ruling power intends to keep in place only temporarily.
