Something that is a potential threat to human life or property
What are natural hazards?
Hazards caused by natural processes eg a lava flow
What are the three types of natural hazards?
- geophysical
- atmospheric hazards
- hydrological hazards
What are geophysical hazards?
Hazards caused by land processes eg earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides and tsunamis
What are atmospheric hazards?
Hazards caused by climatic processes eg tropical cyclones, storms, droughts, extremes of hot or cold weather and wildfires
What are hydrological hazards?
Hazards caused by water movement eg floods and avalanches
What is a disaster?
A hazard that seriously affects humans
What is a risk?
The likelihood that humans will be seriously affected by a hazard
What is vulnerability?
How susceptible a population is to the damage caused by a hazard
