A

-morning of Feb 7th 2009, n-w winds in excess of 100 kmph brought hot, dry air from central Australia
-the storm helped to create almost perfect fire conditions and the winds brought down the power lines at 11.47am in kilmore east, the resulting sparks ignited the fire

  • 173 people dead in total with 120 in the kingslake area
    -414 people injured
    -more than 450,000 hectares had burned
    -3,500 buildings including over 2000 houses were destroyed
    -rspca estimated that up 1 million wild and domesticated animals died in the disaster

A

-a royal commission into the fires was announced on 13th February 2009
-class action law suits initiated in the Supreme Court of Victoria against electricity company sp ausnet which led to a $494 million settlement in relation to the kingslake fire and a $300 million out of court settlement in relation to the Mary’s ills fire
-Victoria police investigated the cause of the fires and charged 1 man and 2 youths with arson
