Material Deprivation
the inability to afford basic resources such as adequate housing food and heating
self fulfilling prophecy
people acting in response to predictions of their behaviour thereby making the prediction come true
cultural deprivation
the idea that some young people fail in education because of inadequate language skills and inappropriate attitudes and values
Independent school
a school which is funded by tuition fees they are often selective and do not have to follow the national curriculum
gender domain
subjects and activities tailored to a specific gender
male gaze
male teachers and pupils look females up and down sexually objectifying them
streaming
a system of dividing school students into groups based on ability in which they stay in for all subjects
restricted code
a form of language which is colloquial everyday language with limited explanation and use of vocabulary
ethnocentric curriculum
the British curriculum gives priority to white culture and the English language
meritocracy
a society in which occupational and other status positions are achieved on the basis of individual merit like talent and skill and educational qualifications
elaborated code
a form of language use involving careful explanation and detail, favoured by schools and more commonly used by middle class students
labelling
attaching a meaning or definition to a student, such as bright or thick trouble making or haardworking
free school
a school which can be set up by parents companies or charities does not have to follow the national curriculum
immediate gratification
a desire to have rewards now rather than waiting to acquire them in the future which is known as differed gratification
social solidarity
the integration of people into society through shared values a common culture shared understandings and social ties that bind them together
