Is psychoanalysis effective in treating abnormal and normal clients?
What is the aim of psychoanalysis?
to diagnose and treat mental and emotional disorders through making sense of a patents past and present life and emotional experiences
What can be diagnosed and treated by it?
Phobias , compulsions , obsessions , anxiety , depression
what is it not so good to treat?
- severe depression
- Schizophrenia
- addictions
- aggression
why has i become popular for normal people?
simply to gain insight into their own behavior
whats a disadvantage of it ?
its lengthy and costly
How long and how many session per week usually?
4/5 sessions a week lasting approx 45 mins each
disadvantage regarding usefulness?
limited usefulness and may not be suitable for everyone because it involves talking about early childhood memory’s which many don’t wish to talk about
weakness regarding subjectivity?
very subjective and interpretations could be biased by own life experiences
what did Eysenck do?
research were he looked into the effectiveness of it and suggested those that received no therapy improved as those who did over the same period of time meaning it may be a waste of time
only therapy were defense mechanisms can be uncovered
to be found to be affecting our behavior so holds the key to help the person improve , roots being cured not just the symptoms
in conclusion ….
it may not work for everyone due to its many problems including bringing up traumatic events from childhood , relying on interpretations and having limited effectiveness but it does allow defense mechanisms to be uncovered which may be the key to improving some peoples behavior
