Oral stage?

A

-erogenous zone is the mouth
-Nerve endings in the lips and mouth are highly sensitive at this time
-Completely driven by ID and seeks constants instant gratification of basic needs (Food and comfort)
-breast/bottle feeding and crying
- Behaviours include teething , feeding , sucking , biting and swallowing
-Mother feeding them as a representation of love
-Learn about their environments through their mouths
insufficient or forceful feeding could lead to fixations such as smoking, nail biting, chewing of pens and sarcasm

Anal stage?

A
  • erogenous zone is the anus
  • Developing its ego to balance wants of the ID
  • beginning to be potty trained and realising they have some control over their biological functions
  • Being praised for not having accidents and told off for accidents
  • withhold or expel bowl movements and interest in ‘messy play’
  • resisting the urge to have a poo is denying the id which up to now has been the motivating source.
  • fixations/adult consequences include anal-expulsive personality, tight with money, really tidy, passive aggressive

Phallic stage?

A
  • erogenous zone is the genitals
  • child becomes aware of gender differences, Attracted to the opposite sex parent
  • Gender specific play begins
  • Genital exploration with masturbation and fondling
  • interest in their genitals marks the start of the Oedipus/Electra complex
  • child has to come personality conflicts caused by the complexes otherwise could lead to adult fixations such as anxiety about sex, fear of castration, Vain personality
  • Freud suggested women never get past this stage and will always have feelings of inferiority and envy

Latency stage?

A
  • child’s energy directed away from earlier sexual preoccupations and all unacceptable thoughts and feelings are repressed
  • Past conflicts should now have been resolved and the child is ready to develop in other areas
  • child’s energy put into developing new skills and acquiring knowledge so education and social skills becomes the focus
  • no particular erogenous zones
  • Cant come fixated to anything at this stage

Genital stage?

A

-erogenous zone is the genitals but this time in terms of adult expression of sexuality
-Interested in opposite sex relationships
-Wants for physical sexual gratification
-Masturbation and adult type relationships
-pornography and sexual exploration with others
-no adult fixations caused and any problems should be put down to issues with the other stages
loving relationships will form
