Freuds theory of Psychosexual development Flashcards
What did Freud believe?
That children pass through 5 stages of development
What are the 5 stages of psychosexual development?
- Oral - 0-1 years
- Anal - 1-3 years
- Phallic - 3-5/6 years
- Latency-5/6 - puberty
- Genital -puberty onwards
What is the place called where pleasure is supposedly derived from?
Erogenous zones which can be different organs on the body
What is libido
Sexual energy
What do differences in satisfying the sexual urges lead to?
Differences in adult personality
What happens of a problem occurs at one of the stages?
people become psychologically stuck and issues will manifest themselves in adulthood as mental health problems
Oral stage?
-erogenous zone is the mouth
-Nerve endings in the lips and mouth are highly sensitive at this time
-Completely driven by ID and seeks constants instant gratification of basic needs (Food and comfort)
-breast/bottle feeding and crying
- Behaviours include teething , feeding , sucking , biting and swallowing
-Mother feeding them as a representation of love
-Learn about their environments through their mouths
insufficient or forceful feeding could lead to fixations such as smoking, nail biting, chewing of pens and sarcasm
Anal stage?
- erogenous zone is the anus
- Developing its ego to balance wants of the ID
- beginning to be potty trained and realising they have some control over their biological functions
- Being praised for not having accidents and told off for accidents
- withhold or expel bowl movements and interest in ‘messy play’
- resisting the urge to have a poo is denying the id which up to now has been the motivating source.
- fixations/adult consequences include anal-expulsive personality, tight with money, really tidy, passive aggressive
Phallic stage?
- erogenous zone is the genitals
- child becomes aware of gender differences, Attracted to the opposite sex parent
- Gender specific play begins
- Genital exploration with masturbation and fondling
- interest in their genitals marks the start of the Oedipus/Electra complex
- child has to come personality conflicts caused by the complexes otherwise could lead to adult fixations such as anxiety about sex, fear of castration, Vain personality
- Freud suggested women never get past this stage and will always have feelings of inferiority and envy
Latency stage?
- child’s energy directed away from earlier sexual preoccupations and all unacceptable thoughts and feelings are repressed
- Past conflicts should now have been resolved and the child is ready to develop in other areas
- child’s energy put into developing new skills and acquiring knowledge so education and social skills becomes the focus
- no particular erogenous zones
- Cant come fixated to anything at this stage
Genital stage?
-erogenous zone is the genitals but this time in terms of adult expression of sexuality
-Interested in opposite sex relationships
-Wants for physical sexual gratification
-Masturbation and adult type relationships
-pornography and sexual exploration with others
-no adult fixations caused and any problems should be put down to issues with the other stages
loving relationships will form
