Why was entertainment important?
The majority of people had very little time off, so it was important to keep up morale during their leisure time

What changes were there to theatre in Elizabethan times?
At first theatre groups were simply “bands of strolling players” who toured the country. A common theme was where the poorer elements of society triumphed over the rich. The authorities were worried about this so the strolling players were banned. Instead theatre groups began to form, and with them the construction of theatres.
How were the theatres designed?
- octagonal
- no scenery
- trapdoors
- oak pillars painted to look like marble
Who supported the theatre?
It attracted large audiences from all social classes; Elizabeth was particularly keen. The authorities liked using the plays as propaganda.
Who opposed the theatre?
The authorities wanted to avoid the gathering of large crowds which often resulted in some civil disturbance and theft. Also the Puritans didn’t approve, believing that theatre was sinful.
