As the “Half-king” representative from the Ohio Indians, he forced British involvement (got an ally) when he killed Jumonville
“Tanaghrisson had committed a murder, but he had also made a diplomatic statement. He was declaring war-on his own behalf and that of the Virginians…”

French General in F&I War who understood the importance of getting Indians to fight for France (as opposed to Montcalm’s desire to fight in a European-manner)
Wolfe
British General - develops bold (suicidal?) COA to end siege of Quebec - gets his forces astride French LOC - force them to come out to Plains of Abraham to fight.
Montcalm
Wanted to fight a European style fight vs. Brits - didn’t understand importance of Indians
Charles Lee
Arguably most militarily competent (but also strange) American General -
Gen Howe
Advocated conciliation toward colonies and stated that he did not believe the British army could conquer the Americans.
Successful at NYC
▪ “Howe being Howe, he permitted almost 3 weeks to elapse after the landing before he went into battle.” (at Philadelphia)
Daniel Morgan
Effective commander - marches with his men huge distances (600 miles in 30 days) to get to Quebec
Successful as a commander in the south (Cowpens)

Clinton
Brit commander - fails initially to get Charleston, does well the second time
Burgoyne
Amateur / play-boy general
Good at Regt level, out of his depth higher. He (and his force) is “yarded” at Saratoga
- Personal ambition & a bad situation led him to continue to press at Saratoga
“a half knowledge is worse than no knowledge”
Gates
Wins at Saratoga
Seen as a political rival by Washington’s close network
