key concepts ++ microscopy Flashcards
what is an electron microscope ?
a microscope that uses a beam of electrons (instead of rays/light) to view images unattainable by the human eye in higher resolution and to magnify finer structures.
what is ‘resolution’ ?
the fineness of detail that can be seen in an image - the higher the resolution of an image, the more detail it holds.
why can some cell structures be seen with an electron microscope but not with a light microscope ?
because they’re able to pick up much smaller things in more detail (e.g. like the internal structure of mitochondria and chloroplasts) but light microscopes can only pick up individual cells and large subcellular structures (e.g. nuclei)
