Key Concepts Ch. 1 Flashcards
Can be tested with observational studies, or experiments or both.
Hypotheses
a body of knowledge about the natural world and an evidence based process for generating that knowledge.
Science
The scientific study of the living world.
Biology
Begins with observations of nature.
Scientific Inquiry
is a direct and repeatable observation of a particular aspect of the natural world.
Scientific Fact
a major explanation about the natural world that has been repeatedly confirmed in diverse ways and is accepted as a part of scientific knowledge.
Scientific Theory
is a change in the overall genetic characteristics of a group of organisms over successive generation.
Biological Evolution
1) make observations
2) devise a hypothesis to explain the observation
3) generate predictions from that hypothesis
4) test those predictions
The Scientific Method
1) are built of cells
2) reproduce, using DNA to pass genetic information
3) take in energy from their environment
4) sense and respond to their environment
5) maintain constant internal conditions
6) evolve as groups
All living organisms:
refers to many different levels at which life can be studied:
atom, molecule, cell, tissue, organ, organ system, individual, population, community, ecosystem, biome, biosphere.
Biological Hierarchy
make biomes, are large regions of the world that are defined by the climate and the distinctive communities found there.
