Is a rule that a bigger state should not bully a smaller state
What is the respobsility to protect
That countries are against mass crimes such as genocides etc
What is NATO
Nato is a group of countries that are in an alliance with eachother
What is the Warsaw Pact
a mututal defense organization
What does Nato do?
Nato is a guarantee that other countries will become involved if you are attacked by a state outside of Nato, It was orginially created to stop the growth of the soviet union
What is foreign aid
Is aid given to a country by a foreign country
Does foriegn aid work?
No, it is not given on the basis of helping it is given on how beneficial it is to the country that is giving the aid ex military needs
When did foreign aid work?
When US gave 12 billion to Europe after ww2 only worked because the state is strong
What is conditionality in terms of the IMF and World Bank?
After they give you the money, they will set restrictions and conditions. Such as.. you cannot spend an x amount of money.
Why go to IMF and world bank and not investors
Because they are there to help countries not to profit off of them
Where does the money for the IMF and world bank come from?
It comes from the countries who have money who give these organizations money in order to have more say in how they disperse it.
Why was the british victory over the spanish armada beneficial
Trade increased as well as they settled in North america
What was the toussaint loverture
It was a slave revolt in Haiti because france was using them as slaves in the plantations.
What happened in the toussaint loverture?
A guy named tuscan lead the revolt but first was a doctor, he died but he laid the groundwork.
Why is the toussaint loverture important?
Because other than the US it was the first colony to gain independance from european empires
What is the hegemonic theory?
It is a theory that the world would be the most peaceful when there is one global power.
What is a security dilemna
When one country arms themselves for defensive purposes then another country feels threatened and arms themselves as well which can result in an arms war
What is an example of a security dilemna
When the soviet union dissapated it caused the countries to feel unsafe because there was no longer a super power protecting them from attacking eachother
What is the paradigm shift?
In the US, they switch from intervene internationally to isolation every 20-30 years and this is because of some sort of traumatic crisis that happen in recent history
What is an example of a paradigm shift in the US?
After 911 they moved to intervention and then when the vietnam war ended badly they shifted to isolation
