Key Concepts Flashcards
What are the five stages of information processing?
Input, encoding, storage, retrieval, and output.
What are the three types of forgetting?
Decay, displacement, retrieval failure.
Define decay.
When information hasn’t been used or rehearsed so it fades.
Define displacement.
Older information is pushed out by new information, due to a lack of storage space.
Define retrieval failure.
Information in memory can’t be easily accessed, due to a lack of cues.
What is anterograde amnesia?
Memory loss of experiences that take place after neurological damage.
What is anterograde amnesia caused by?
Damage to the hippocampus.
What is retrograde amnesia?
Memory loss of experiences that take place before neurological damage.
What is retrograde amnesia caused by?
Damage to the frontal lobe.
What is procedural memory?
Memory of motor skills such as walking, eating etc.
What part of the brain controls the procedural memory?
The cerebellum.
What is global amnesia?
After damage to the hippocampus and the frontal lobe, it’s when we lose short term and long term memory.
