Key Concept 1: Conformity Flashcards
What is Conformity?
A type of social influence when people change their behaviour or viewpoints due to perceived pressure from a person or group in order to fit in.
Normative Social Influence (NSI)
When people conform because they want to be accepted by the wider group to be liked and not rejected. For example, saying you like a certain brand because all of your peers like it.
Informational Social Influence (ISI)
When we change our behaviour or views because we believe that the group is better informed than us and therefore right as they do not want to be wrong. For example, when you change your answer to a question in class because you believe everyone else knows better than you.
