describe the importance of genetic influences on behaviour
genes inherited from our parents. 50% mother and 50% father. the more closely related the more likely they will share the same characteristics. a person has their ‘nature’ (genes) and ‘nurture’ ( environment )
describe the role of neurotransmitters on behaviour
CNS consists of brain and spinal cord. the automatic nervous system controls functions of the body e.g.. heart and lungs and we have no conscious control. the periphal nervous system (PNS) controls those parts of the body to which we have conscious control e.g. flexing muscle
the brain guides behaviour through neurotransmitters functioning. neurotransmitters are chemicals which pass from neuron to neuron
describe the role of hormones
send messages more slowly than neurotransmitters and have a large part to play in development as males or females
describe the role of brain structure and behaviour
hippocampus, where STM occurs, hypothalamus produces hormones that influence gender in pregnancy. the brain is in 2 halves joined by a mass of bundles called the corpus callosum. brain lateralisation is the term used for considering 2 halves of the brain separately. studies have shown that males and females use these differently.
