heston Flashcards
what did hestons study show
demonstrated that biological children of schizophrenia parents were just as likely to develop schizophrenia reared by biological or adopted parents
showed that it is genetic
what was the aim
to see if schizophrenia was a genetic predisposition
what was the method of heston
participants = 50 adoptees who biological mothers had been diagnosed with S1 compared to control group of 37 adoptees who’s mothers had not been diagnosed with S1
compared psycho-social adjustment and school, police and hospital records
had personal interviews - 3 psychiatrists independently rated
results of heston
incidence of schizophrenia in general population is 1%
those who had a family history of S1 10% were later diagnosed
conclusion of heston
research shows that S1 has a strong genetic component
strengths of heston
- rich qualitative data as they completed interviews which would have open ended questions and takes emotions into account
- naturally occurring independent variable which means they didn’t have to tweak the experiment and already had one so makes it more realistic - whether the mother had S1 or not
weaknesses of heston
- unequal sample size 47:50 which makes it harder to directly compare results
- no cause and effect every environment was different
- low control over variables as had different environment and genetic factors affecting them, some may have been on medication
- cant be generalised as it is a small sample and can only be applied to people with S1 which is a specific area
